Food Allergy Guidelines
Parents will provide all medications which will be administered according to GVSD medication policy guidelines (per school handbook).
A “no sharing and no trading” food policy at lunch and snack time will be encouraged.
Parents will provide all safe snacks and lunches for their child.
The student will be permitted and encouraged to have a snack brought in from home instead of a community snack on occasions when the class is sharing food.
Substitute teachers will be made aware of student’s allergy by their regular subject teachers.
Elementary classroom will be maintained and designated as “Peanut Free” or "Nut Free"; teacher will endeavor to ensure food and snacks brought into the classroom are” Peanut/Nut Free” as are all lessons and student activities.
The student will be permitted to choose seating, so as not to be sitting next to or across from a student who is consuming a peanut/nut/ product.
Cafeteria tables will be wiped down prior to each lunch period.
A cafeteria table will be designated “Peanut Free”.
Teachers will provide a letter to go home with all students regarding a student’s peanut/nut allergy and the need to keep the environment peanut/nut free.
School staff will be notified of student’s Food allergy at the beginning of the school year, by his/her parents and the school nurse.
Cafeteria staff will be notified of the student’s Food allergy.
Staff will be educated on signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and emergency procedures to follow in the event of a reaction.
Teachers will demonstrate the use of the Epi-Pen (via Epi-Pen trainer) with the nurse prior to going field trip
Parents should complete an inpidual Food Allergy Action Plan (downloadable at www.foodallergy.org)
