Reading Techniques

Reading Techniques is a course at the middle school that offers instruction in a wide range of reading strategies for students to learn in small groups and apply through both guided and independent practice. Reading Specialists serve a dual role, co-teaching with ELA teachers in a large group setting and reinforcing specific reading skills in a small group setting.

Throughout the course of the year, the students will learn the following active reading techniques:

· Questioning

Self-questioning (Before, during and after reading)

Types of questions and Question/Answer Relationships

· Predicting

Using author clues to make logical predictions and inferences

Recognizing structures and sequence

· Making Connections

Text-to-Text, Text-to-Self, Text-to- World

Comparing and Contrasting

· Visualizing

Imagery and details

Creating and changing mental pictures

· Clarifying

Context clues

Summarizing and paraphrasing

· Evaluating

Developing schema

Relevant vs. irrelevant text
